e the GAP West Newcom to Ohiopyle

Greetings!

We went back in Ohiopyle.  This time by bike.

And what an awesome ride!  Waterfalls and cliffs on the right, the Youghiogheny river down on the left.  Sometimes it was placid and sometimes the river was roaring.  And then it seemed all day perfect weather and a canopy of trees.  Across from the river was a busy train track.  If it came when I was in the right spot on a river bend, it sounded like it was roaring up behind me.

I had a nice chat with a couple from Sacramento, California.

Along the trail was a memorial to the 239 men killed in a mining explosion.  As a result miners no longer wore open flames for light.
A couple trees were down.! I was able to create ramps to rolle my heavy bike over them.

We started on day one riding eight miles to the Pittsburgh mile marker about 150 mile.  Day 2 we passed mile marker 100.

Painted tanks outside a cut glass shop.

I was the first to roll out of the GAP Trail campground. I ride slower than Joan.  So sometime during the day she catches up to me and we might get lunch together.

There was only one other camper at the campground.  Since we spent the rainy day with him we got to shar some stories.  Milton works in the Navy.

Other bike tourists going from
B&B to motel tease me that my load is so big.  I have yet to use the cooking stuff, but that will come soon on the C&O which is more isolated from stores.

The cliffs have some crAzy rock formations.

We bike 47 miles from West Newton to Ohiopyle.

We stayed in a room in an old house with the other three bedrooms full of bicyclists riding the trail.

Today was a good ride too but too long for my body.  I will have to tell you about that another time.  I didn’t sleep well for two nights, I need to sleep now.  G’night.

  1. Thanks for posting about your ride to Ohiopyle as I wondered where you had stopped between West Newton and Frostburg. There is so much to see along the whole trail that it is hard to take it all in and keep going.

  2. I totally agree with you. This is a more leisurely ride than most of the tours do and still I can’t read all the kiosks and memorials and soak in all the views.

Six-Month US Tour Starts In Florida

Greetings from Fort White, Florida, We did it.  Despite mishaps and some angst, I am still feeling some angst, we have begun our 2024 Travels. Angst Last year we traveled together but I had Big Blue (my truck) and Lilac (my camper) with me.  And though I moved stuff into Steve's trailer and stayed with him, on travel days I was driving Big Blue on my own, and I had all the stuff that I don't use very often in my truck and trailer nearby. This is our first full season traveling with one truck and one trailer.  I am trying to adjust.  Steve is very accommodating and a good partner for this trip.  It's just me, worrying. And maybe some of the angst is world news, the US 2024 elections, and some of it is worrying about my son.   He just changed jobs and then in a few days he got laid off from the new job making him un-eligible for unemployment because he had not worked there long enough.  He will be fifty this year and I still worry.  So if you k...

Trippin' Trip Prepping

This evening I have an owee on my nose, but I am feeling pretty dang happy. I last wrote to you when we were still in New York.  Let me tell you about our adventure getting home to Florida first. Then I will tell you about the nose. Our last day in NY, Steve's kids came over for dinner.  Steve's son brought his guitar and speaker and I got to hear him play a tiny bit as he and Steve fiddled with the controls on the speaker.  And get this, a year and a half after I started hanging out with Steve, I finally got to hear him strum a guitar.  But they didn't play a tune for me.  They just putzed.  Some day... Our flight from Albany, NY to St Pete, FL was to take off on Monday at 7 pm.  Steve's daughter gave us a ride to the airport.  We arrived in plenty of time. We boarded the plane.  We were practically the only passengers with masks on.  We didn't want to risk taking something nasty home to our friends in Florida.   The plane did...

It Isn't An Adventure Unless Someone Almost Dies

Greeting from the Center Of The Universe, I will get to the "almost died" part later.  But I guess I should give you an explanation about the Center of the Universe. Steve's daughter Erin and her boyfriend Matt joined us for a few days at the Center of the Universe.   How do we know it is the center?  It is marked by a fancy manhole cover in the middle of an intersection in downtown Wallace, Idaho.   Twenty-six years ago the mayor of Wallace declared that they were the center.  His reasoning was that there are four mountain passes that come right through the middle of Wallace.  As good a reasoning as any, since no one knows where or if the Universe has boundaries.  And now the small tourist and mining town has a new reason to hold a little festival/celebration each year. I hope this letter finds you doing well.  My friend Margaret got COVID and is still weak and tired from it. She is working her way back into her biking and exercise rout...
