Do you prefer knowing where you are going?

Friday and Saturday, September 6th and 7th, 2019

Hi,

Friday night I had no reservations and didn’t know where I would land.

Some people love that.

Me, I was worried.  It was a Friday night,  a time of festivals, concerts,  fairs and sold out camping areas.

I drove the back roads heading toward Greenville.

I had stopped at a McDonalds to get access to Wifi and blog.  After that, I didn't get very far and I saw an Anytime Fitness and stopped in to work out.

I was aiming for a state park just north of Greenville, South Carolina.  It was 5 hours away at least, according to Googlemaps.com

When I stopped for lunch I gave the campground a call to see if there were any sites.

They had 7 tent sites available but they would not save let me reserve one.

When I told them I would probably be there after 5, they said the sites would not still be available, there was music in the park this weekend, it was filling up.

I looked for motels in the Greenville area.  Pretty pricey and I really brought all this camping stuff for a reason, so save money on lodging and get me outside more.  The comfort of a motel room with air conditioning was enticing.  It was 95 degrees again.

When I crossed the South Carolina border I passed a state park.  But then just a few miles down the road was another one.  It was about 4:00 p.m.  I called and they had spots so I drove in... a few miles to  Baker State Park.  I got another lake side spot with a view and a breeze.

Only $17 for the night!

I set up camp.

Then I walked a mile to the dumpster and a mile back.  My hip began to ache.  I have been having an issue with my hip.  The pain comes and goes, mostly comes when I walk around cleaning house... or working in the kitchen or going for long walks.

I felt myself close to tears.  I am missing George.

I imagined what this trip would be like with him and his dementia.  Cleaning him up, walking very slow and holding him up.  Yet still I felt it would be company, it would give this trip a "WE" instead of just "me".

Feeling old I sat and read for a while.  I texted friends and called my sister.   It was good to chat and I felt a little better.

I sat until the light got dim.  Then crawled inside my tent.  I thought I would read, but I couldn't keep my eyes open.  Only 8:30!  What's with that!

  1. I cry with you Sue as I too do things alone. Not as exciting as what you are doing, but they were our things. Especially lonely when facing difficulties. You are one brave gal and I admire you. So many of us going through this together, yet alone. I read something yesterday that touched my heart, "We're all just walking each other home." It helps me connect with others. You seem to have that going for you. Take care.

Six-Month US Tour Starts In Florida

Greetings from Fort White, Florida, We did it.  Despite mishaps and some angst, I am still feeling some angst, we have begun our 2024 Travels. Angst Last year we traveled together but I had Big Blue (my truck) and Lilac (my camper) with me.  And though I moved stuff into Steve's trailer and stayed with him, on travel days I was driving Big Blue on my own, and I had all the stuff that I don't use very often in my truck and trailer nearby. This is our first full season traveling with one truck and one trailer.  I am trying to adjust.  Steve is very accommodating and a good partner for this trip.  It's just me, worrying. And maybe some of the angst is world news, the US 2024 elections, and some of it is worrying about my son.   He just changed jobs and then in a few days he got laid off from the new job making him un-eligible for unemployment because he had not worked there long enough.  He will be fifty this year and I still worry.  So if you k...

Back In Florida, Reuniting With Routines And Folks

Hello from Inverness, Florida! We made it back to what I consider my home base, Inverness, Florida, on October 26.  Since then we have been kind of busy.  I love my Florida routine.  Monday, Wednesday and Friday I have morning exercise with friends and then the gym for weights and PT exercises.  Tuesday and Thursday I ride with the Withlacoochee Bicycle Riders (WBR), and on Saturday I meet WBR friends for breakfast.  I love these folks here. Unpacking and Reloading My truck was parked in Steve's Garage without the cap.  The engine started right up and the interior didn't smell musty.  Yay! My trailer, LILAC also did not have bugs or mice or any moldy smell. The next day I moved into my assigned camping spot at Oasis Mobile Home and RV park about three miles south of downtown Inverness.  It is a small spot and it took me a while to get it into position.  All my neighbors were out trying to help me with directions that didn't make sense....

Amazing Views, Pheonix, AZ to Carlsbad, NM

I am grateful not to have been in the path of Helene and Milton.  If I had a house on the coast I would sell and move to a safer location... or live on wheels like I already do. I say that, but when I moved to Inverness with George in 2016, it felt like we had moved to paradise. I was so happy to be surrounded by new friends, experience great winter weather with many sunny days, and enjoy sitting outside without swatting mosquitos.    I could send out an email to my biking friends that we were putting on a pot of chili and would love it if they came at a certain time to help us eat it.  And suddenly we would have a party of more than a dozen smiling folks. If you are wondering why people keep rebuilding in an area hit by hurricanes, it may be they just can't face leaving their happy place, where they have found a community of caring and fun.  It is their paradise.  As far as I know, the Inverness area may have gotten over 10 inches of rain from Milto...
