Some Times Are Harder Than Others

Greetings from Minneola, Florida,

Wow, am I tired and my ass is sore and my sciatic isn't happy either.

But we didn't quit!  And that is something with the weather report showing a high probability of rain all day and two friends offering to come rescue us.

We left the lovely LA Quinta Inn at 9:00. If we would have waited another 45 minutes we wouldn't have ridden in the rain at all!

I had planned on cutting over on Lake Mary Rd but when we got there, we saw the road was very busy with no shoulder or sidewalk.  We were only about 1/4 mile from where we needed to be at the start of the Seminole Wekiva Trail, but we had to detour.

We went back to the Cross Seminole Trail where we rode yesterday.  We retraced our steps and headed north to a trail that goes over Interstate 4.  The whole detour was about seven miles.

There we saw some places where I might have been able to get a room, if only I had known that Lake Mary Rd was not at all bike or pedestrian friendly.

So seven miles after we started we were peeling our rain gear and were starting the Seminole Wekiva Trail which is only 1/4 mile from La Quinta, our motel via the awful Lake Mary Rd.

This trail is also called The Painted Trail.  There is a section where artists have painted the fences along the trail.

We met up with the Bike Florida women riders.  They told us that our friend, Holly, had fallen in a three-bicycle pile up yesterday.  She is sore but not broken, they told us. We never saw her.

At the southern end of the wekiva trail,  we had to take roads to get to the west Orange Trail.   We took the sidewalk along hwy 436 all the way to the West Orange.

We stopped in Winter Garden for lunch at 2:00.  We were both over hungry.

Now after 48 miles and many moanings from me about my ass and tired legs, we are resting at the Orange Motel.

We have to decide, do we do a long ride tomorrow or do we stay in place or just go a short distance.   ðŸ¤”

We will see.  Steve tells me we have ridden 181.6 miles in the past week.  It is OK to be tired.  And my bicycle is only four days mine, and four days of riding.  It's OK to be tired and sore...

  1. We are so glad to hear you are now taking a break in Winter Garden. You have to be complemented on riding so far on a new bike - and seat. No wonder you are sore! Tomorrow, again, looks iffy for weather. It is not a crime if you decide to get a lift across the “gap” after Groveland. None of the alternative routes have looked particularly great to me in spite of the fact that many ride through there - some on dirt, some along Rt 50 and some detouring north but still on roads with no shoulder. Good luck, whatever you decide!

Six-Month US Tour Starts In Florida

Greetings from Fort White, Florida, We did it.  Despite mishaps and some angst, I am still feeling some angst, we have begun our 2024 Travels. Angst Last year we traveled together but I had Big Blue (my truck) and Lilac (my camper) with me.  And though I moved stuff into Steve's trailer and stayed with him, on travel days I was driving Big Blue on my own, and I had all the stuff that I don't use very often in my truck and trailer nearby. This is our first full season traveling with one truck and one trailer.  I am trying to adjust.  Steve is very accommodating and a good partner for this trip.  It's just me, worrying. And maybe some of the angst is world news, the US 2024 elections, and some of it is worrying about my son.   He just changed jobs and then in a few days he got laid off from the new job making him un-eligible for unemployment because he had not worked there long enough.  He will be fifty this year and I still worry.  So if you k...

Fire, and Wind on "The Rock" (Newfoundland)

It is pronounced New-fun- LAND.  Each time I say the word, I have to say it one or two more times because the new-fun part is said fast and the accent is on the LAND.  NewfunLAND.  Old habits and old pronunciations are hard to break. There are a lot of pictures and stories in this post.  Feel free to skim or dive in, it's your choice.  If you want to dive in, stop here and get your favorite beverage. It's going to take a while. Why Do I Do This Blog? I have several reasons for doing this blog. I blog to remember these adventures and times.  I need a record of what I have done so I can refer to it in the future or to boost my memory. I blog to keep in touch with friends and family.  I emailing and text some.  But I love a lot of people!  And this way you can choose how much you read.  I can't bore you because you can stop whenever you want. I blog to share my travels, joys and mistakes with you so you can have some of the fun or com...

Florida to Maine

Hello!  Long time no write.  I have missed you! I turned 72 this week.  I am fortunate to be one of the active and mobile seniors.  Though my feet snap and crackle when I first get up, and my back demands constant attention to good posture, stretching  and strengthening. I love that I can still walk, get up and down off the floor with ease (most the time), and bike.  I am blessed and grateful for it. We are traveling again.  This time with Steve's truck and trailer.  And the highlight of our trip just happened two days ago.  So read on, skim, or skip.  There are a lot of pictures. **** We left Florida just a week after our plane landed from Europe.  (To read about our trip to the Netherlands, Germany, and the Czech Republic, start here .)  We packed up the trailer and headed out, taking two short travel days to get to Charlotte, NC where we visited our Florida bike and brewery friends, Ann and Jim. We parked and slept in ...
