Quick trip to Wisconsin

Greetings from the Airport in Appleton, WI.

I didn't really plan way ahead for a trip to Wisconsin.  I kind of played with the idea of visiting my sister for her birthday at the end of March.

But one day, I talked with her on the phone.  If you have been reading this blog a while, you may remember that her husband was diagnosed with dementia before George was diagnosed in 2014-2015.

His decline has been very slow.  But now he is getting pretty wobbly and unsure in his step.  After a couple of bad falls he is supposed to use a walker,  but you can imagine how that is going.  How can you remember to use a walker when you sometimes don't know that you are sitting in your own house and not someone else's.

After our talk on the phone, I cleared my calendar and booked a flight.  Allegiant flies a couple times a week from St. Pete, FL to Appleton, WI direct.  Perfect.

I am writing this in the airport.  I have been gone eight days and I am looking forward to hugging Steve and putting on flip flops.

Here are a few pictures from my trip.

I saw this sign while walking through a nice neighborhood in Appleton, WI.

I arrived late at night. I used Lyft for the first time, and spent the night at a La Quinta Inn.

The next morning I walked a few miles to the rental car place.

I took this picture while taking pictures of any scratches and scuffs on the rental vehicle before I headed to Rhinelander.

The afternoon I arrived, the sun was shining and it was warm enough to sit on the deck listening to the drip drip of the snow melting off the roof.

The compost bin Steve built last summer for Mary is still standing strong.

On the weekend, Mary got a caregiver in so we could escape to Wausau.  There I kept her company while she shopped for a new vehicle.  I am happy with her choice of a Ford Maverick.  After all, I like my Ford...it starts every time!

Sunday there was an ice storm.  We had a relaxing day in the motel room.  The motel had a nice fitness room I enjoyed.  I rode a Peloton for the first time.   Pretty cool and my body didn't hurt like on other stationary bikes I have ridden.

The ice and snow broke tree limbs in Rhinelander.  The power went out.  Mary's house is on a well, so no heat, no toilet, no water for 18 hours.

I enjoyed cutting up downed tree limbs and scraping ice off the driveway.

Mary had created a room in her basement since we last visited.  It was a cozy and warm place to relax and sleep.

Thursday we went back to Wausau for some more paperwork on the car purchase and to go to the art museum where they were having a display of kimono art.

Then I got to have coffee with some friends that are on the same political page as I am.  I heard about their plans for April 5th and what activism they are doing to resist the loss of the balance of powers in the United States.

Steve made me a sign since I won't be home until late tonight and the protests are Saturday morning.

I was fortunate to be able to get away and visit Mary.   She was very appreciative and it looks like she will be getting more hours of caregiver help each week.

  1. We are very happy that you were able to visit your sister and give her a much needed break. That certainly was a terrible ice storm and you were fortunate to have little damage as well as getting the power back on so quickly. We hope your trip back to Inverness went smoothly. As Fred and I head north on Monday, we probably won’t see you until next winter - unless our paths cross over the summer. Hugs to you and Steve.

  2. What a week to spend in Wisconsin with snow and ice storm and no electricity. I’m sure Mary loved having you there. Good to know she’s going to get some extra help so important as a caregiver. I am feeling better not totally out of the woods yet, but getting there. Sorry we couldn’t get together for longer time.Hope to see you next fall for sure.

Six-Month US Tour Starts In Florida

Greetings from Fort White, Florida, We did it.  Despite mishaps and some angst, I am still feeling some angst, we have begun our 2024 Travels. Angst Last year we traveled together but I had Big Blue (my truck) and Lilac (my camper) with me.  And though I moved stuff into Steve's trailer and stayed with him, on travel days I was driving Big Blue on my own, and I had all the stuff that I don't use very often in my truck and trailer nearby. This is our first full season traveling with one truck and one trailer.  I am trying to adjust.  Steve is very accommodating and a good partner for this trip.  It's just me, worrying. And maybe some of the angst is world news, the US 2024 elections, and some of it is worrying about my son.   He just changed jobs and then in a few days he got laid off from the new job making him un-eligible for unemployment because he had not worked there long enough.  He will be fifty this year and I still worry.  So if you k...

Back In Florida, Reuniting With Routines And Folks

Hello from Inverness, Florida! We made it back to what I consider my home base, Inverness, Florida, on October 26.  Since then we have been kind of busy.  I love my Florida routine.  Monday, Wednesday and Friday I have morning exercise with friends and then the gym for weights and PT exercises.  Tuesday and Thursday I ride with the Withlacoochee Bicycle Riders (WBR), and on Saturday I meet WBR friends for breakfast.  I love these folks here. Unpacking and Reloading My truck was parked in Steve's Garage without the cap.  The engine started right up and the interior didn't smell musty.  Yay! My trailer, LILAC also did not have bugs or mice or any moldy smell. The next day I moved into my assigned camping spot at Oasis Mobile Home and RV park about three miles south of downtown Inverness.  It is a small spot and it took me a while to get it into position.  All my neighbors were out trying to help me with directions that didn't make sense....

Grateful for Head Nets in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota

Greetings from Grand Marais, MN on the western shore of Lake Superior, I hope this finds you well and smiling.  Thanks to those of you who commented or sent a reply or text.  I love hearing what you are doing and keeping in touch. I need to warn you, there will be a lot of pictures here, so skim if you want, pause if you are curious.   It is beautiful here near the Canadian border.  There are remnants of very old mountains, lots of waterfalls, and parts of the coast of Lake Superior look like the Northeastern coast of the U.S. We traveled north from Duluth to Grand Marais, some of the road runs along the coast with grand vistas.  We saw there is a paved bicycle trail in places.  The Gitchi Gami.  We parked and walked up it a way to get a better look at the lake and one of the car tunnels. At the top of the hill we saw a young woman learning to rock climb.  There are existing clips all up the side of that rock over the tunnel. There we also fo...
