Day-0... Get ready

The fridge is cleaned out.  The items to load into the car are mostly packed and sitting on the living room floor.

Tomorrow we launch our 3-month awesomely amazing adventure in celebration of our 40th wedding anniversary.  George was diagnosed with dementia, possibly Alzheimer's last year, I have planned this trip as our "last hurrah" together.

The goals:

  • Enjoy the journey.  Don't just push to the next destination, but enjoy the people, the sites, the experiences along the way;
  • Have so much fun that we don't get homesick for our friends and neighbors back home;
  • Keep the costs down!  3 months is a long time on the road, and we aren't camping.  We are staying with Evergreenclub members (a travel club) and with friends and family... A couple of Air bnb's, a KOA or two, an occasional discount motel.  Picnics instead of restaurants as much as we can while still making an occasional restaurant visit to experience a town.
  • Ride new trails and re-experience old trails with our recumbent trikes.

We just got a call from one of the places we are staying in Colorado.  She was just confirming that she will be having us stay at her place to watch her house and her cat while she travels elsewhere.  Free accommodations in exchange for some yard work plus we get a friendly cat to pet!

Our story is soon to be available on Amazon.  Launch is tentatively schedules for on or around February 1, 2019.  To keep reading, look for Alzheimer's Trippin' With George by Susan Straley.

After our 3 month trip ended and we returned home, I continued to post occationally to keep friends and family abreast of our life as George loses more of himself to the brain disease.  The continued story will also be on Amazon around February 1, 2019.  Please join us on this amazing, heart breaking and heart warming experience:  Alzheimer's Trippin' With George - The Journey Continues.

Flexible Life, Plans Change

Greetings from Mississippi, "Wait.... what? You are in Mississippi?" you may ask. Yes, I am. Last I wrote you I had a wonderful plan.  After riding the New River Trail in Virginia, I would attend a Sisters On The Fly (SOTF) event on the border of Virginia and Kentucky.  Then to the Virginia Creeper Trail starting at Whitetop Mountain, then I would make my way to Myrtle Beach and then meet up with friends to ride Jekyll Island.   A great plan with some great places to visit and some friend time too. And I was living the plan.  I was at Breaks International State Park with the some Sisters.  Then I got a call from my friend Jean in Mississippi.  She just got a bunch more clients and was asking if I could come help her with all the paperwork involved. She treats trauma victims with a special treatment called EMDR.  And she is good at it and helps people.  What better task is there for me? The timing was perfect because I was just thinking that I was done being a tourist.  I have

Count Down to Book Launch - 1 more day! Giving Tuesday

December 3, 2019 Good Morning! Brrrr, it is a cold one here in central Florida!  Freezing in parts of Citrus County. Only ONE MORE DAY to the launch of the second book, THE JOURNEY CONTINUES! The 6th Annual Coping with Dementia Conference is January 22nd.  If you are a caregiver or know someone with dementia, this is a great resource to learn more about the illness and the resources available in Citrus County and beyond.  Hello! My nephews wife commented that I have not posted in a while.  My sister replied, "She's been having too much fun!" But it isn't all waisted play-time, some of it is taking care of myself and things.   For Example This morning I got up early, by six, and decided I would write to you before I was to meet up with folks for a "senior" activity that my sister had arranged, a pontoon boat ride at 1:00.  It is kind of a neat program that is in Wisconsin and Minnesota called "Let's Go Fishing".  They give boat rides or take people out fishing.  Qualification to get a free ride, you need to be a veteran, or disabled, or be over ... I don't know what age qualifies as "senior citizen", maybe over 62 or over 65? I needed to go for a walk first to get some exercise in because writing and sitting on a boat are not good for the body.  So I walked on the road by the campground.  There was fog and the woods were popping with the drops fall
